Simple Rules

Simple Rules To Follow

One of the truest tests of integrity
is its blunt refusal to be compromised.
Chinua Achebe

After much suffering and tomfoolery, I came to a basic understanding of how I choose to live my life. I abide by three simple rules:

1) Do the right things.

2) Stay the course.

3) Never compromise integrity.

Of course, proclaiming and “doing” leave much room for error.
Often, I don’t recognize the “right thing.”
Daily existence finds expression in messy and murky ways, twists and turns rather than a straight path.

I can only turn to the outcome and judge my actions by the actual results—not what I intended to happen, hoped might happen or wished for.
This trial and error requires courage, the willingness to confront failure again and again, start over and once more, examine the aftermath and ask the question:
“Did I or did I not obtain the desired result?”

If yes, great.
Do more of that.
If no, oh well.
Lick my wounds, chalk it up to experience and go back to the starting blocks.

If I stay the course, I can be guaranteed that eventually, the result will come, though I can never tell on the front end how long “the course” may run.

Unless I compromise my integrity.

Providence has a wicked sense of humor. It finds the most devilish incarnations to point out the strictness of causality and the inescapable truth of “we reap what we sow.”
Personally, I’m too scared.

Too many instances of pain and regret have led me to deeply understand that no person, possession, goal, target, dream or fantasy will ever merit a compromise of integrity—the beginning of the slow, slippery slide that ends in a muddy puddle of delusion and misery.

I’d rather slug it up the high road, weighted down with a heavy pack, bothered by aches and torments, in the rain, or the sleet, or the snow or whatever than face the inevitable repercussions that show up on all levels when we decide to cross the line.
I know that if I keep on trucking, no matter how hard, no matter how far, I’ll get there and enjoy the clear vista at the top that can only be seen through clean eyes.
Guaranteed.

Every day new challenges present themselves, new opportunities to test our mettle, to define ourselves.
If we focus on the small ones and build the muscle continuously, it makes it easier to rally when the big ones try to slap us around.

Don’t go there.
You don’t have to.
It never pays.
Never.

Oh, but if you do, you can rest assured that you will pay, too.
